Plane crashes in Asuncion, kills 5

A small plane owned by a private hospital crashed minutes after its departure from the capital, killing all 5 passengers in it.

Witnesses said that the plane exploded in midair first before it crashed to an open field near Asuncion's international airport. More details about this incident are here in this AP news article.

Visa Exemption in Paraguay and Vietnam's Diplomats and Officials

The Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that an agreement on visa exemption for diplomatic and official passport holders signed between Paraguay and Vietnam's government, will take effect from October 26.

The agreement was signed on March 8, 2007 in Asuncion where it specifies that the two countries' diplomatic and official passport holders with residence not exceeding 90 days will be exempted from visa.

Parguay's Economic Growth and Stability

Land Rights for Natives

The indigenous Guarani people of Gran Chaco region already won the legal rights to thousands of acres of their ancestral land in Argentina. They reclaimed the land because if forms the basis for their survival and prosperity.

These indigenous communities are collaborating across borders to learn how get along with their country's law with the assistance of other organizations and advocates.

Church World Service is responsible for assisting indigenous people in land claims advocacy supports projects focused on water availability and better ways of sustainable agriculture projects.

Rebuff the Dam Treaty

Paraguay's new President Fernando Lugo visited Brazil to talk about earning for his poor country more money for a dam on the countries shared border also considered as the largest hydroelectric project in the world.

He is planning to change the treaty between the two countries that will give each nation half the electricity that the dam generates.

The treaty was signed in 1973 by dictators of both country and will expire in 2023.

US officials visit Paraguay

Because of America's focus on the Middle East, it has particularly chilled up its relations with the other nations of the world--most especially South America. Both Bolivia and Venezuela have already expelled their US ambassadors. What is next?

And what is the United States doing about this? The key, it seems, is to take it slowly. Just recently, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Christopher McMullen paid a visit to Paraguay to extend diplomatic talks.
